The watermelon is rightfully called “the dietary lord of the summer,” since it is the most refreshing and tasty fruit of that season.
Due to its high water content (90%) it constitutes a source of refreshment and it is the ideal way to hydrate during the hot summer months. Moreover, it can be eaten as a main meal because it is nutritionally light.
The watermelon is a heavy and oversized fruit. It has a hard and quite thick rind, it has a smooth exterior in shades of green with alternating stripes and its interior is white.
The flesh of the fruit is red, sweet, juicy and contains many black seeds. Watermelon seeds can be consumed and have high nutritional value, though this is a matter of personal preference. Since they contain fiber, they are a good source of protein and fat.
Watermelon is rich in antioxidants, such as lycopene. Seeing as it contains a large amount of water it is perfect for dieting despite the myth that says it is inappropriate and that it contains many sugars.
It can be consumed as fruit in pieces or slices, it can also be made into juice or a delicious and sweet preserve. Watermelon may be used in cocktails, variations of fruit salads and it can be deliciously combined with feta cheese.
It is easily kept inside or outside the refrigerator.
